Dr. Tag is a board-certified plastic surgeon with a specialty in aesthetic plastic surgery, whose expertise spans cosmetic breast enhancement procedures such as breast lift surgery. Dr. Tag routinely serves breast lift patients from the greater Baltimore metropolitan area, including Towson and Essex, from his office in Owing Mills, MD.

What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a cosmetic breast procedure designed to lift, reshape, and restore a more youthful position to sagging breasts. Breast lifts are among the most common cosmetic procedures Dr. Tag performs at his practice in Owings Mills, MD.

Breast sagging, also called breast ptosis, commonly occurs due to natural life changes and the gradual loss of skin elasticity. Several factors contribute to drooping breasts, including:

  • Pregnancy: Breasts enlarge during pregnancy, stretching the skin and supporting tissues.
  • Breastfeeding: Changes in breast volume after nursing can leave the skin stretched.
  • Aging: Natural collagen loss reduces skin firmness and support.
  • Weight fluctuations: Significant weight gain or loss can stretch the skin of the breasts.
  • Genetics: Some people are naturally more prone to breast sagging.

A breast lift addresses these concerns by removing excess skin, tightening the surrounding tissue, and repositioning the nipple and breast tissue to achieve a more youthful contour.

What Are the Benefits of a Breast Lift Procedure?

A breast lift lifts sagging breasts to a higher position on the chest, giving you a firmer and more youthful contour. This procedure can also:

  • Correct nipples that point downward or sit below the breast crease
  • Reduce the size of enlarged areolas if desired
  • Improve symmetry between breasts
  • Enhance your overall confidence and comfort

Some patients can experience temporary changes in nipple sensation after a breast lift, but sensation typically improves during recovery.

Unlike breast augmentation, which adds volume, a breast lift reshapes the natural tissue of your breasts by tightening the remaining tissue to enhance firmness and contour. It’s a great option if you’re happy with your breast size but want to restore shape and firmness.

Who Are the Best Breast Lift Candidates?

A good candidate for breast lift surgery is usually a woman interested in correcting one or more of the following issues:

  • Breasts that appear sagging or have lost their youthful position
  • Stretched or enlarged areolas
  • A deflated or flattened breast shape
  • Nipples that point downward
  • Nipples that fall below the natural breast crease

It is recommended that candidates consult with board-certified breast lift surgeons to ensure the highest standards of safety and achieve optimal, natural-looking results for patients seeking to enhance their breast volume.

Breast Lift After Weight Loss

Losing a significant amount of weight is an incredible achievement, whether through lifestyle changes or weight loss surgery. However, many patients notice that after significant weight loss, the skin and supporting tissues of the breasts may not fully tighten. As a result, the breasts can appear deflated, sagging, or lower on the chest than desired.

A breast lift can help restore a more youthful breast contour by removing excess breast skin, tightening the surrounding tissue, and repositioning the nipples to a higher, more natural position. This procedure helps the breasts better reflect the new proportions of your body after weight loss.

Dr. Tag frequently performs breast lift procedures for patients throughout the Baltimore area who have undergone significant or bariatric weight loss. For many individuals, a breast lift is an important final step in their body transformation, helping them feel more comfortable and confident after all the hard work they have put into improving their health.

Whats The First Step?

Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Tag. He’ll evaluate your breast shape, skin quality, and overall health to determine the best surgical approach.

This appointment is a chance to discuss your goals, ask questions, and review before-and-after photos. Patient education is a key part of the process, ensuring you are fully informed about the procedure, risks, and recovery so you can make the best decision for yourself. Dr. Tag will explain what to expect, including recovery and potential risks, ensuring you have realistic expectations and feel confident moving forward.

Preparing for Your Breast Lift Surgery

Preparing for your breast lift surgery is an important step toward achieving the best possible results and a smooth recovery. Before your breast lift procedure, you’ll meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals, review your medical history, and address any questions or concerns you may have. During this consultation, your surgeon will carefully assess your breast tissue, the amount of excess skin, and your overall health to determine the most effective approach for your breast lift.

To minimize the risk of complications, you may be asked to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, and to avoid nicotine in the weeks leading up to your breast lift surgery. It’s also essential to arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure and to have a support system in place to assist you during the initial recovery period. By following your surgeon’s pre-operative instructions and preparing both physically and mentally, you’ll set the stage for a successful breast lift and the beautiful, natural-looking results you desire.

How Dr. Tag Performs Breast Lift Surgery

Dr. Tag performs mastopexy surgeries, also known as breast lift procedures, in a properly equipped and accredited surgery center or a hospital. A breast lift is performed under general anesthesia, with careful planning of incision types to achieve the best results. We’ll discuss the surgical facility and surgical appointment during your consultation. You will be sedated with general anesthesia until the procedure is complete.

  • Upon waking, you may feel groggy and sore. We will then move you into a comfortable recovery room until we clear you to return home.
  • You will need to arrange for someone to accompany you to the appointment and drive you home afterward.
  • There will also need to be someone at your home with you continuously for the next 24 hours.

Our incisions depend on several factors, mainly the degree of ptosis and excess skin.

Combining Your Breast Lift with a Breast Augmentation

Some patients notice that, along with sagging, their breasts have also lost volume over time. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, or the natural aging process can cause the breasts to appear both deflated and lower on the chest. In these cases, combining a breast lift with breast augmentation may provide the most balanced result.

A breast lift reshapes and elevates the natural breast tissue, while breast implants restore fullness and projection. When performed together, these procedures can create a fuller upper breast contour while lifting the breasts into a more youthful position.

During your consultation, Dr. Tag will evaluate your breast tissue, skin elasticity, and desired outcome to determine whether implants may enhance your results. For many patients, combining breast implants with a lift allows Dr. Tag to restore both shape and volume in a single procedure, helping achieve a natural, proportional appearance that complements your overall figure.

Breast Lift in Conjunction with a Breast Reduction

Patients that are interested in decreasing their breast volume can undergo a breast reduction to achieve better proportions or alleviate medical issues such as back pain. A breast reduction also provides a lift at the same time to help tighten the skin and elevate the nipples while also reducing the areolar size if needed. The surgical incisions are similar and can allow you to achieve lighter, perkier breasts in a single surgery.

What Different Incision Placement Will Dr. Tag Consider?

There are three types of incisions Dr. Tag may use for a breast lift:

  1. Donut Lift: Around the areolas (this incision looks like a donut shape)
  2. Lollipop Lift: Around the areolas and vertically downward toward the breast fold (this incision resembles a lollipop shape)
  3. Anchor Lift: Around the areolas, vertically downward to the breast fold, as well as horizontally along the breast fold (this incision resembles an anchor)

Dr. Tag uses these incisions to lift and reshape the tissue that supports the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the remaining tissue. This breast procedure increases the firmness of your breasts and raises their position. The nipple position and areola are elevated for a natural look, and Dr. Tag may reduce the size if that is part of your treatment plan.

Once everything is reshaped and looking good, Dr. Tag closes the incisions. These incisions will heal into very discreet scars. Any vertical incision may be slightly more noticeable, but it becomes lighter and flatter over time. Some patients may choose to combine their breast lift with breast implants or breast augmentation surgery to enhance breast size, shape, and overall results.

Breast Lift Recovery

You should get up and walk around a couple of hours after surgery to promote healthy blood flow. You will likely feel sore, and your breasts will be swollen. We will prescribe a pain reliever or recommend an over-the-counter pain reliever to help you feel more comfortable if needed.

Wearing support garments and handling your breasts gently will help minimize swelling and promote optimal healing during recovery.

You should be home for a few days after surgery. Most patients experience manageable discomfort and are able to return to normal activities, such as work, within a week, but listen to your body and do what’s right for your recovery.

You’ll need to sleep on your back during this time to promote proper healing and settling of the breast tissue and avoid strenuous exercise for 4-6 weeks.

You can begin wearing underwire bras about 4-6 weeks after surgery, which is also when many patients start to see their results take shape. Subtle improvements in swelling and breast contour may continue for several months as the tissues fully settle.

Seven Breast Lift Recovery Tips

Dr. Tag recommends the steps below for a safe recovery for patients following a breast lift surgery.

  1. Carefully follow all postoperative instructions from Dr. Tag and the team to ensure a speedy recovery.
  2. Take pain medication as prescribed so you can feel more comfortable
  3. Walk around a couple of hours after surgery to promote healthy blood flow
  4. Wear post-surgery support bras to help minimize swelling of the breasts
  5. Sleep on your back during the recovery process for the breast tissue to settle
  6. Avoid Exercise and activities that will strain the body as directed by Dr. Tag
  7. Attend follow-up appointments with Dr. Tag so the team can monitor your progress and tailor your recovery plan to suit your needs best.
