According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, “Breast reduction has demonstrated benefits in reducing symptoms (such as back and neck pain) and improving psychological well-being (such as poor body image and low self-esteem) in women with overlarge breasts.”1

Dr. Maakan Taghizadeh (“Dr. Tag”) is excited to meet you and help you feel comfortable in your body and confident in your breasts through our personalized breast reduction experience.

What is Breast Reduction?

A breast reduction, also known as a reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove breast tissue, and skin to create smaller, lighter breasts proportionate to the body. As a result, the breasts no longer droop; they appear perkier, have a higher projection, and improve your ability to do more activities with ease.

One primary goal of breast reduction is to alleviate chronic pain caused by the large breasts. The pain is often present in the shoulders, neck, and back from the bra straps digging into the skin. Skin infections can also develop under the breast fold due to trapped heat and moisture from large breasts.

Though younger people may be dissatisfied with their large breasts, the Mayo Clinic says, “You can have breast reduction surgery at any age — sometimes even as a teenager. But breasts that aren’t yet fully grown might need a second surgery later in life.”2

Whats The First Step?

Your breast reduction experience at U Plastic Surgery + Aesthetics in Owings Mills near Baltimore starts with a consultation with Dr. Tag. The goal of the consultation is to provide you with sufficient information, including the various techniques and results timeline, to make an informed decision about whether breast reduction is the right procedure for you. Additionally, Dr. Tag will use your medical information, aesthetic goals, and a thorough examination of your breasts to determine if he believes the procedure will accomplish your goals.

If you both agree that breast reduction is right for you, Dr. Tag and our team will create a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your individual needs that will set you up for success at your surgical appointment and your recovery.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery can look different for each of our Owings Mills and Baltimore patients, as each surgery is tailored to the patient’s unique goals and anatomy. After Dr. Tag places you under general anesthesia, he will make the incisions agreed upon during your consultation. The different breast reduction techniques are:

The anchor method uses incisions around the areola, vertically down the front of the breast, and along the breast fold to create a “T” or anchor shape.

The vertical option removes tissue through an incision around the areola and vertically down to the breast fold.

When Dr. Tag has finished making the incisions, he will remove excess breast tissue and skin. Breast reductions typically provide a lift at the same time. Finally, he’ll close the incisions with dissolvable sutures and place a surgical bra around you to keep the swelling down.

Patients have the option of sending the removed breast tissue for pathology.  This may be either covered by insurance or could require an extra out of pocket cost.

Breast Reduction Recovery

Properly recovering from your breast reduction in Baltimore is the best way to ensure you achieve optimal results. You can expect the initial recovery period to be about 3 to 5 days, but you will need to take off work and stop doing regular activities for at least a week. Over the course of 4 to 6 weeks, you can gradually return to regular exercise, monitoring your pain and incisions to ensure you don’t reopen them. Your progress will be monitored during follow-up appointments, so make sure to follow any additional recovery instructions that arise.
